We went off on a high speed train again today to Toledo. The historic centre is high on a hill above the river Tagus. Of course the new railway station is the other side of the river.
The Romans built a fortress here, the Visigoths made it their capital in the 6th century and it also has a strong history of Christian, Muslin and Jewish cultures. They are well known for their fine swords and knifes and decorative items made out of steel and gold.
I offered to buy a new suit for Frank, this is the one I suggested as this is also a speciality of Toledo. I thought he was most ungrateful not to take up mu offer!
The Toledo Cathedral is built n the site of a Visigoth cathedral and a mosque and construction began in 1226 although it was not completed until 1493. It is a mixture of Gothic, Mudejar and Plateresque styles.
Inside the Sacristy is a collection of paintings by Titian, Van Dyck, Goya and El Greco. The ceiling is richly decorated.
